Install and your first world
This page takes you from nothing to a world you can walk around in: install KHIM Engine, sign in, make a world, add a part and press Play.
What you need
| Windows | Windows 10 (version 1803 or later) or Windows 11, 64-bit |
| Mac | Apple Silicon or Intel |
| Graphics | OpenGL 3.3: Intel HD 4000 and later, AMD Radeon HD 5000 and later, NVIDIA GeForce 400 and later |
| An account | Free, at khim.net. You need it to go live, not to build |
Install KHIM Engine
- Open khim.net, sign in, and pick Download > KHIM Engine (the Workshop's Overview page has the same button).
- Windows: run
KHIM-Engine-Setup.exe. It installs into your user folder - no administrator needed - and adds a KHIM Engine shortcut to the Start menu and the desktop. - Mac: unzip
KHIM-Engine-mac.zipand move KHIM Engine.app to Applications. The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID yet, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and press Open Anyway.
KHIM Engine keeps itself up to date: when a newer version is out it installs it the next time it starts.
KHIM Engine opens on Home. Press Sign in with browser: your browser opens khim.net's sign-in page, and once you sign in there KHIM Engine is signed in too. Your password is never typed into KHIM Engine.
You can build and test without signing in. Signing in is what lets you Go live and see Your games.
Make a world
On Home, press New world. The window asks three things:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| Name | The file's name, My world to start with |
| Kept in | The folder: Documents/KHIM unless you change it |
| Starts as | A template: Flat ground (a floor and a spawn), Obby (a short jump course), Coin Rush (coins, teams, a shop, a vault - a game to learn from), Sandbox (players build and break blocks) |
Press Create. The world is saved as a .khim file straight away and opens. Next time it is at the top of Home's Places tab.
Ctrl+N
Ctrl N makes a blank, unsaved world at once. Ctrl S asks where to save it.
Look around
| Do this | To |
|---|---|
| Hold the right mouse button and move | Look around |
| W A S D, Q E while looking | Fly; Shift goes slower |
| Middle mouse drag | Pan |
| Mouse wheel | Zoom toward what is under the pointer |
| F | Fly to what is selected |
The panels are the Hierarchy (everything in the world, left), the Inspector (the selection's properties, right), and the Console and Assets (below). The interface has the full tour.
Add a part
- Press the + on the tool dock at the bottom of the view (or right-click the view) and pick Part. A block appears in the middle of the view, selected.
- Press Ctrl 2 for the Move tool and drag an arrow to move it. Ctrl 3 scales, Ctrl 4 rotates.
- In the Inspector, give it a Color and a Material. A new part is Anchored: it stays where you put it. Untick Anchored and it falls when the game runs.
Play it
Press F5 (or Play at the top). Your character appears at the spawn and the world runs exactly as it will for players: physics, scripts, the game's HUD. Walk with W A S D, jump with Space.
Press Shift F5 to stop. Anything the test changed is put back the way it was.
Save
Ctrl S. A dot after the world's name at the top means it has unsaved changes. KHIM Engine also keeps an autosave every five minutes and before every test, and the last 20 saves of each world (File > Open an Earlier Save).
